F TRUCK LOSES IT AFTER CEMENT TRUCK ROLL OVER No one was injured Saturday after a cement truck rolled over on its side along FM 150 near the Onion Creek double crossing in Driftwood. But the resulting traffic led to separate incident in which the North Hays County Fire Rescue was called upon to rescue two horses from a trailer. The driver of the cement truck suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for observation. But Collard said a driver pulling a horse trailer with two horses had to stop quickly to avoid the traffic backup that resulted from the accident. Collard said one of the horses slipped under the second horse in the sudden stop. Collard said crews responded and assisted with getting the horses untangled and safely out the trailer. Helping the NHCFR was large animal rescue training, which was taught at Texas AampM University several months ago. This was invaluable to help make a successful rescue, Collard said. Collard said a NHCFR firefighter who responded to the accident is also a veterinarian. The firefighter said the most injured horse is being treated at a large animal hospital and the prognosis looks good, Collard said. WOMAN CRUSHED BY HORSE After being crushed last week in an accident involving a horse, Wendy Inga is improving in the hospital, family members said Monday. Inga, best known in Granbury for driving a carriage in the downtown square, is recovering from internal injuries and two broken bones in one leg, her sister Diane Gilbert said. Wendy is doing better. She is still listed in critical condition, but she is stable, Gilbert said. However, doctors are predicting a lengthy recovery, she said. Only family is being allowed in to visit at this time and Inga is sleeping a lot. To help Inga pay the medical bills for what is expected to be a lengthy recovery, Gilbert said the family has started a GoFundMe account. This was her main source of income. We want to help her keep up with her bills while she is healing, Ingas friend and business partner Robin Arquette explained. Donations will be used to pay for horse feed, medical bills and other expenses while Inga recovers, she said. NEW ZEALAND CRASH Emergency services were called to the incident just after 9:50am on River Rd, Trentham in Upper Hutt. Witnesses who were backed up in traffic at the accident said the animal was visibly thrashing about as fire fighters worked to remove the roof of the float. A vet was called and the horse was given a sedative before being freed from the trailer. Stitches were applied to a wound the horse sustained before it was walked to a nearby riding centre. No people were injured in the incident. ROY, UTAH -- Roy City Police are investigating a horse shooting Saturday. The owner, 78-year-old Gail Larsen, found his horse Cinnamon with two gunshot wounds to its forehead. You can find horses all over for sale but not ones broke really well and are really gentle, said Larsen. Larsen bought Cinnamon 13 years ago with the intention of getting a horse gentle enough for his seven grandchildren and 29 great grand-children. Cinnamons biggest fan, according to Larsen, four-year-old great-granddaughter, Lydia. That was the hardest part was telling her because we had just been down here Friday, said Larsen. She loved that horse. She thought that horse was hers. Shed tell you its hers. Shes been crying non-stop since hearing the news, according to the family. Lydias older sister, 8-year-old Addisen Larson-Ware, has been supporting her. I said its going to be alright. Its going to be okay, said Larsen-Ware. Lydia doesnt understand how this could happen and frankly, neither do the adults. أنا لا أفهم. I dont understand why anybody would do that or could do that, said Larsen. Detective Josh Taylor with Roy City Police has been talking to neighbors and trying to figure out who would do something like this. Its not something they want to hear that something has been killed nearby. I know a neighbor close by said the horse was very nice and they couldnt believe someone would do that and they were kind of disturbed that someone would come out and shoot a horse of all things, said Taylor. Its an incredibly concerning crime considering all of the other animals and families that live nearby. Whos next Me or the children going to school said Larsen. The family is offering a 5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The Humane Society of Utah is adding 5,000 to a reward offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for shooting and killing a horse in Roy, Utah. The Roy Police Dept. said it would like to speak to anyone with information at (801) 629-8221. KICKED BY A HORSE - SPLIT LIVER COLUMBIA, S. C. (WIS) A toddler, who was just minutes from death when he was rushed into surgery after being kicked by a horse, has made an amazing recovery. Landon Anderson, 3, loves horses and being at his grandmothers farm. Hes there a lot, his grandmother, Wendy Sanders, said. Hes always been around these horses. They love him. Seven weeks ago, Landon did something he was told not to do. He pulled a horses tail. Next thing I know hes telling me the horse kicked him, and there was no sign of trauma when I lifted his shirt, Sanders said. Sanders took him to an urgent care in Gilbert to get him checked out. Physicians there wanted him to be taken to Palmetto Health Childrens Hospital to have his internal organs checked. Evidently between leaving there and getting to the hospital here, he went downhill, Sanders said. The ambulance communicated with the hospital and when we got here, they did a 2-minute assessment and took him back immediately to surgery. Sanders said Landons liver was nearly split in two from the kick. Doctors later told her that Landon had just minutes to live. When he came out of surgery they told me if he had been another minute or two longer, he would not have made it because he had lost over 50 percent of his blood by the time he got here, Sanders said. Sanders said she owes her grandsons life to Landons surgeon, Dr. Juan Camps, and to Palmetto Health Childrens Hospital. We wouldnt have Landon if this hospital wasnt here, and I am so thankful for them, she said. We just had our last ultrasound and (his liver) looks to be almost completely healed -- like 98 percent healed -- like it almost never happened. So he went from almost dying, to like it never happened. All because of Dr. Camps. Sanders and her grandson joined WIS-TV to share their story in honor of the hospitals 16th anniversary. A fundraiser was held Thursday to raise funds for specialized playground equipment for Palmetto Health Childrens Hospital. The hospital treats 150,000 children each year. RESCUED FROM THE FEED BIN Heres another incident to add to the long list of horses finding creative ways to get themselves into trouble. Firefighters near Windsor, Colorado, were called to the rescue on Thursday morning when a 25-year-old horse named Katie was found trapped in her own hay feeder, which appears to be made from a modified tractor tire. Two different fire crews came to the scene: The Loveland Fire Rescue Authority and Windsor Severance Fire Rescue. There were no witnesses around when Katie got trapped within the tire, so neither the fire crews nor her owners know how she ended up there or how long shed been stuck. She may have fallen or perhaps simply decided to lie down on her hay, as some horses do in winter. However she got there, she was wedged in and couldnt get back up again on her own. According to reports, it took at least 15 people an hour to get Katie back on her feet using a specially designed harness and a ladder truck. The horse had no apparent injuries from the ordeal, and a vet examined her afterwards and said she was OK. According to a Facebook post from Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, Katie had been sick with an unspecified illness this week and the vet had already been scheduled to visit her on Thursday prior to her run-in with the tire. A BRIDGE TOO FAR Jasper National Park, Canada Trainer David Cowley rode a horse across the Glacier Skywalk for the first, and possibly last, time ever. The Skywalk suspends people, and in this case a horse and rider, 918 feet above the valley floor below. Were here to show the level of ultimate level of trust between horse and rider. What Im hoping for out of this experience is that people who are learning about it for the first time can realize the potential of a relationship that can be built between horse and rider, Cowley narrates in the video. Flanked by 4 spotters, Cowley rode his Palomino horse gingerly around the Skywalk. When Cowley and his horse finally stepped off the glass and back onto concrete, the spotters showed visible emotion of relief and began cheering. HORSE HEALTH HOW TO IDENTIFY LAMENESS Lameness essentially means an abnormal gait, which is most of the time caused by pain. How common is it Lameness is very common. It is the most important performance-limiting reason in most equine disciplines and the most common reason for the end of a horses athletic career. Many horses cope with a low-grade lameness without their ownerrider noticing it, which does not mean that they would not be happier or would do better if they were not lame In a recent research study, nearly half of general riding horses in full work, thought to be sound by their owner were actually lame when examined by a vet. Does a horse actually have to be limping to be lame The severity of lameness ranges from subtle and hardly noticeable, to severe with some horses not even being able to put weight on their sore leg. The severity of lameness often correlates with the severity of injury, but this is not always the case. Horses with a foot abscess can be very lame and hardly walk. Once the abscess bursts, lameness usually improves quickly and horses may even be sound the following day. On the other hand, horses with a severe lesion in their superficial digital flexor tendon are often not lame at all or only mildly, but if the injury is not diagnosed and treated promptly, the injury can get worse (the horse will eventually be lame) and the tendon may even tear completely. How would you identify that your horse might be lame Some horses (especially with moderate to severe lameness) will limp, which is easy to see if the horse is lame on one of the forelimbs, but in other horses lameness may be more subtle. You may notice that your horse does not do particular tasks as well as he used to. He may not want to go forwards, may prefer to go on one rein to the other, feel less powerful, or just feel flat. A dressage horse may struggle with particular movements (e. g. is late in flying changes, does not half pass correctly on one rein). A show-jumper may not want to land on one rein compared to another, or may start refusing to jump. You may find that your horse no longer works in an outline he may be behind or above the bit, heavy in the hand or just fight the contact. Some horses also change their behaviour as a result of pain, which owners can sometimes mistake for naughtiness rather than an underlying injury. If a horse finds flexion of their hindlimbs painful (e. g. because of sore hocks), they may become difficult with the farrier or when the hind feet are picked out. How can you tell which is the problem leg Forelimb lameness is usually easier to spot than hindlimb lameness. If the horse limps, he will lift his head when he puts the sore limb on the ground. Severe hindlimb lameness may be easy to spot, if the horse is not bearing weight or is dragging the limb. Again, take note of which rein your horse has started to struggle working on as this may be another indication. How can you tell which is the problem leg Forelimb lameness is usually easier to spot than hindlimb lameness. If the horse limps, he will lift his head when he puts the sore limb on the ground. When would it be appropriate to call your vet If you notice or suspect that your horse is lame, it is always a good idea to call your vet for advice. Based on how urgent they think the problem is, they will advise whether your horse needs to be seen immediately, or it is ok to wait until you can get a scheduled routine appointment. What checks can you do If you find your horse lame, you should check their feet. Occasionally a stuck stone or pulled shoe can make horses quite sore. If you know or suspect which leg is lame, you can feel the leg for any unusual swelling or an area that is hot or painful. However, if you dont feel your horses legs on a daily basis, you most likely wont be able to spot problems unless quite severe. Although good to identify a problem, it is best to leave the diagnosis to your vet. What can you do to prevent lameness When buying a new horse, getting himher vetted is a good start. Your vet may spot a lameness or another issue that is not obvious to you. Keeping a horse in regular work has many benefits, including building up and maintaining muscle strength. A horse with good muscle strength is less likely to overuse joints and ligaments than a weak horse. If the horse is only occasionally worked, especially if heshe is then asked to do a lot, they may be more likely to sustain an injury. If workload is increased, it should be done gradually. Attention should be paid to the surface the horse is worked on. If the ground is too hard, it may cause concussion to the feet and other structures of the limb. If the ground is too deep, it can overload tendons and ligaments. Uneven ground may also increase the risk of injuries. The horses workload should be varied asking them the same task too many times andor too often (e. g. advanced dressage movements or jumps) can lead to overuse of various parts of the limbs and subsequently lameness. Feeling your horses leg on a daily basis will help you to get used to what is normal for your horse and to spot if he develops a new swelling or a certain area is warmer or more sensitive than usual. 6 REASONS TO TAKE UP HORSE RIDING Figures prove that riding can have great health benefits, as well as putting a smile on your face, so here are six reasons why adults should take up the sport. Being active lifts our mood, reduces stress and anxiety, improves our physical health, and gives us more energy. Megan Hawkins, PR executive for the British Horse Society (BHS), states the health benefits of riding are proven in a study commissioned on behalf of the BHS. The study found that horse riding meets the intensity level of exercise recommended by government guidelines. The report found that just half an hour of horse related activity, such as mucking out, is classed as moderate exercise, while trotting exerts more energy than playing badminton, says Megan. As well as exercise, spending time with animals is believed to raise levels of the mood-enhancing hormone serotonin, so its good for your body, brain and emotions. Megan adds: The report showed the psychological benefits of interaction with horses, with 80 per cent of participants noticing a positive change in their mood after riding. Riders felt more cheerful, relaxed and happy for being active. It was discovered anecdotally that horse riding can play a role in managing negative feelings relating to anxiety and depression. Showing producer Natalie Reynolds says: Riding is a well known stress reliever and can also help with confidence issues. It can be a huge achievement for the novice rider to even contemplate getting on a horse, let alone controlling the animal with their voice and body aids. Dressage rider Louise Bell says: A good mental state is really important and riding does have the ability to make you feel better when other things in life are going wrong. However, dont get on if youre in a bad mood as your horse will be able to feel it. In order to stay balanced in the saddle youll have to learn to use your core muscles. Natalie says: Riding physically strengthens the body, especially the core. Its a full body workout and helps to increase our balance and improves our posture. Its likely that your posture out of the saddle will improve the more regularly you ride. Louise adds: Fitness is achieved by riding, but helped more so by working on core strength as thats your anchor as a rider, especially in dressage. If youre weak in that area you need to work on it the body is an amazing thing and is the easiest to train so dont be afraid to try. 4. Burning calories out of the saddle Whether youre mucking out, grooming, pushing wheelbarrows or carrying buckets you will continue to burn calories once youre off the horse and back at the yard. Natalie says: Working with horses is constant physical work, and for people who work in an office environment, it can be a great release for them. Riding does, if you want it to, have a competitive nature and getting involved in competitions can lead to new friendships and a desire to do well. Once you start competing youll find dedication is the key to success. Dedication is what you need and there will be days when things go wrong, but the days when it goes fantastically well make up for the bad ones. If you keep your focus on your realistic goals anything is possible, says Louise. There are always new challenges whether youre a newcomer or an experienced rider. Theres always a new challenge whether its working with a certain horses personality and finding a solution or learning a new skill, such as show jumping. Horses never fail to challenge us, says Natalie. LETTER OF THE DAY NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP AND HOBBLE TRAINING Hi John. I know you will have a reason for this but these people are asking how I hobble trained and why I didnt use a rope to lift the leg and teach them to lift the front leg with the rope like others are training. So that they learn to move the foot with pressure - before putting on the front hobbles. Well, that is not part of the systems that evolved from the 1800s. They are adding new age Natural Horsemanship, to the Australian proven systems across Millions of Horses, including all the Light Horse. For starters, the worst shoeing horses on the Planet, are NH Horses, with this Lift the Leg with the rope Its all false controls, co-operating with the horse where the FENCE does not co-operate with Horses. You start lifting legs and they start evading, just the same. Learned evasions and never the total giving horses that doesnt think evade. You can train a Horse to lift Legs via a Rope, all You like and it has no association when it comes to them being trapped or fearful. So I understand the principal of which she speaks but People who do use hobbles, DO NOT do what they say. They are thinking of NH Trainers who do this BUT DO NOT hobble train. Now let me put it another way. If the fear of a Horse losing it and attempting to escape when hobbles are installed, is the motivation of the Human for going half NH in the process, one needs to consider that even if You went around and lifted all the Legs with a Rope, with the advance amp retreat that is the principal of NH (but invented by Kel Jeffrey ) and You then install Hobbles, not only the exact reaction can occur but even worse because when the co-operative approach is employed, the Horse already has cemented its pre-conceived ideas but when they are suddenly found missing (where movement is still an option for the Horse) a worse outcome can result with more reaction than normal Hobble Training. He has not been handled for eight years, so I put a bridle and saddle on him and lunged him for five minutes to see what he would do. He did not attempt to hump or object, just a little nervous. I picked up and cleaned all his feet, no problems. This is One Million Dollars The Australian Sports Commission are livid over the positive drug incident and the way EA have handled it and withdrawing funding from Dressage. EA are trying to save costs by centralizing a lot of processes including management of sponsorship, the branches and Executive Officers arent buying it because they dont trust EA with the money and obviously their jobs will go. Major events are headed to venues that are privately owned and run, National Dressage champs at Boneo, only a matter of time before AI3DE ends up at Wallaby Hill. EA has to wind back spending on events so it can pay wages. Background is that I first met ------ at a -------r clinic in Perth in June 2015. She was from--------n and Im in ----------. We shared the same accommodation for the duration of the clinic. We kept in touch after that. She then decided to head to the NT to work for 6 months on a station, so I offered to look after her 2 geldings. She contributed payments for costs only, and then an additional 193. When we was still in the NT and towards the end of her stay, she offered me a 16 year old stockhorse mare that she was no longer using. I accepted the offer, but she then had someone interested in purchasing the horse. I was happy for her to sell the horse if she wanted, but she decided she would rather give it to me. I have a copy of our conversation to confirm this. She bought the horse down on the 3rd of Feb 2016. After a period of sightseeing around the SW, they eventually loaded up the 2 gelding and went back to -------. Shortly after, ---and her partner ------ moved to -----in NSW. In October 2016, ----- even offered me another stock horse mare as she had decided to go a different direction after participating in the Brumby Challenge. I recently sent the mare to be service by a local stallion, but the scan showed the she absorbed the pregancy in the heat. As it is the hot part of the year, and the mare is 16, we decided that it would be unwise to try again this season. Now ------is claiming that she wants the mare back, and that she only loaned her to me for the purposed of pregnancy. This is incorrect. She never set those conditions out, and never used the words loan or borrow. She even admits in a recent textemail that she didnt clarify the details. She is now claiming that Ive stolen the horse. She and now other people, have been threatening me and going around spreading rumours. I believe that she is back in the NT working again. A horse had to be put down after being spooked by a drone outside a luxury hotel in Zermatt, according to a local paper. The horse was one of two attached to a carriage that was stationary outside the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof last week, reported the Walliser Bote. Seeing a drone overhead, the horses panicked and took flight down a path behind the hotel at such a pace that the 1.5 ton carriage fell over. One of the horses suffered several fractures and had to be put down as a consequence, Andreas Biner, the president of the community that owns the hotel, told the paper. No one was injured in the incident. While Biner stressed that that accident was exceptional, the authorities are now considering how to better prepare animals to cope with drones. According to Swiss law, no permit is needed to fly a drone that weighs under 30kg, although the pilot must always keep the drone in sight and it should not be flown over gatherings of people. The City Fathers couldnt understand what the Hell I was talking about NEWS OF THE DAY FORMER UNDERBELLY PROSTITUTE AND POLICE OFFICER GETS HERS A Wollongong judge has thrown out an appeal by former prostitute and NSW Police trainee Kim Hollingsworth over her 2016 conviction on animal neglect charges. Hollingsworth, whose story from Kings Cross stripper to police trainee was portrayed in the Channel Nine series Underbelly: The Golden Mile, was banned from owning horses for two years after being convicted in June last year of three charges relating to 27 malnourished and diseased horse seized by the RSPCA in 2014 from rented properties at Oakdale, Cobbitty and Wilton. Veterinarians who inspected the horses found each of the animals was severely underweight due to a lack of sufficient food for at least two months. They also discovered a litany of other medical issues including internal worms, excessively long hooves, (making it difficult to walk) and various skin conditions. Hollingsworth contested the allegations in a lengthy hearing in Wollongong Local Court, arguing she had entrusted the feeding of the horses to others who had apparently not carried out her instructions as directed. However Magistrate Mark Douglass found Hollingsworth guilty of the charges, saying she had ultimately been responsible for the animals. He placed her on a good behaviour bond and banned her from owning horses for two years. She lodged an appeal against the decision and had been due to front Wollongong District Court on Monday for a three-day hearing, however called in sick with gastroenteritis and asked for the case to be adjourned to April. However, Judge Andrew Haesler refused the lengthy adjournment and relisted the case for Tuesday, noting every month it was delayed would cost the RSPCA a further 17,000 to care for the horses. Hollingsworth failed to show up again on Tuesday due to sickness, prompting Judge Haesler to deal with the matter in her absence by dismissing the appeal. In doing so, he said hed read all the evidence presented in the local court and agreed with Magistrate Douglass finding of guilt, concluding the case against Hollingsworth had been overwhelming. Hollingsworth now has 28 days to sell or give away any horses remaining in her care as per the court orders. She must also pay the RSPCA 147,000 in legal costs and 484,000 to cover vet, feed and boarding costs for the seized horses. Hollingsworth has 364 days to appeal the decision to the Court of Criminal Appeal. BRITISH DRESSAGE HORSE SOLD TO DENMARK Fiona Bigwoods Rio Olympic medallist horse Atterupgaards Orthilia has been sold to the Danish international grand prix rider Agnete Kirk Thinggaard, and the horse has already moved abroad. After winning team silver at the Rio Olympic Games, Fiona credited the bouncy Gribaldi x Donnerschlag mare now 12 for her return to riding after a career-threatening accident in which she fell from a horse in April 2014. She now competes in an eye patch to help mitigate the double vision caused by the accident. Together Fiona and Tillie were on the British team at the 2015 European Championships in Aachen (Germany), as well as in Rio. They helped secure team silver on both occasions. It was a very hard decision but Tillie is in the prime of her competition career and I want the best for her, said Fiona. My home commitments mean I can only do around four top level shows a year and she deserves to have her full potential realised. Shes the most talented, generous and clever horse Ive ever ridden, but I know shell have the best home and chance of success with Agnete. We waved her off yesterday on her journey to her new home in Denmark. Fiona and her husband Anders Dahl have recently located to a new base near Haywards Heath in West Sussex with a guide price of 6m which needs major renovation and will take up much of Fionas time. However she has no plans to retire any time soon. I love training and competing, so my career is far from over. I have some exciting youngsters at home and am currently looking for another so Im not ready to hang my boots up just yet she added. My priority is my family and home so while I wont be out competing at the big internationals for a while, Ill still be busy at home working on producing a future Olympic champion for Britain. Fiona has recently bought a new horse, the rising six-year-old Oldenburg gelding Daytona Platinum (Dante Weltino x Charon), who finished sixth at the 2016 bundeschampionat in Germany. More than a dozen neglected horses have been seized by the RSPCA from South Australian properties and are receiving urgent treatment. The RSPCA SA says it has been flooded with reports of cruelty against horses in recent weeks and has seized 15 of the animals suffering from conditions like malnutrition, emaciation, overgrown hooves and infected eyes. Chief Inspector Andrea Lewis says it will cost more than 30,000 for vets to treat the animals, which include young horses and a pregnant mare. Horses were suffering from malnutrition, emaciation and infected eyes. (Supplied) To have this number of horses come into our care at once puts a large strain on our resources, she said in a statement. But we will always do whatever we can treat and care for animals, and create the best outcomes possible for them. The RSPCA said it will cost more than 30,000 to treat the animals. (Supplied) The RSPCA is appealing to the public for the funds needed for the horses care and has already received more than 6000 in donations. It says 70 people have so far offered to provide the horses with foster care. CENTRE DIVISION TRAPS HORSE Monroe, Washington In a post warning people to check their divider pins, Professional Equine Services, a mobile vet, shared photos about a horse that could have been seriously injured or killed when the divider pins came loose. The divider and horse apparently thrashed around inside the trailer for quite some time before the mare became wedged under the now loose divider. It is reported the cotter pins were missing from the divider pins, and when the trailer went over a bump, the divider came loose. During the accident, the divider punched several holes in the roof. Dr. Dana, DVM, arrived and sedated the horse. The saddle and hay bags were removed, and ropes tied around the back legs of the mare. Firefighters arrived about that time, and helped remove the wedged divider. The mare was dragged from the trailer, and laid on the ground until the sedate wore off. She sustained no injuries during the incident SHOW JUMPER ATTACKS AND TRAMPLES BY STANDER Grantham, Englad A showjumper who purposefully trampled and dragged a woman by her hair has been sentenced. Amy Ridler, aged 20, admitted in court to attacking Jill Williams, 50, after she believed Williams was filming her with a cell phone. Ridler was fined 250 (316,) ordered to pay 300 (379) restitution and ordered to stay away from Williams. The attack happened in April 2016 when Ridler was showjumping at Arena UK in Grantham. Ridlers horse refused to jump the first fence, so she smacked it, hard, and tried again. Her horse again refused to go over the fence, and Ridler was eliminated. Ridler saw Williams using her phone in a way that appeared she was filming, when in reality Williams was texting and moving the phone to reduce glare from the sun. Ridler yelled at her mom, who was standing near Williams, to Get that fing phone away from her. Ridler continued yelling and cursing at Williams and threatened to trample her with her horse. TWO RODEO HORSES DIE CAUGHT WITH HIS PANTS DOWN AND WASHING THE PONIES BOTTOM A man was branded dangerous after being caught having sex with a horse stabled near his home. Julian Mark Ridgeway, 54, was also told to confront his deviant sexual history after being sentenced to four years in prison with a further six years on licence by Recorder Paul Greaney QC at Leeds Crown Court. Ridgeway was convicted by a jury of trespassing at an outbuilding in South Lane, Netherton, Wakefield with intent to commit a sexual offence on May 10, last year and of intercourse with an animal between April 18 to May 10, report the Huddersfield Examiner. He lives on the same road. The court heard he was seen leading the mare, Honey, from her stable on May 10 by her owners who were keeping watch because they were suspicious something was going on. They challenged Ridgeway who ran off but semen was found matching his DNA, indicating sex on a previous occasion. Recorder Greaney said in 1990 Ridgeway was caught in a compromising position naked from the waist down washing a ponys bottom by her 16-year-old owner and had choked her within an inch of her life to silence her. He was convicted in 1991 of attempting to murder her and jailed for eight years. Mr Justice Jowett said then: You were about to behave in a disgusting manner with her pony and when she surprised you, you quite plainly decided she should not live to tell the tale. The judge added: It is quite clear to me, but for the fortunate appearance of her mother on the scene you would have kept the pressure on her throat and made no mistake about it the second time, and she would have died. Ridgeway was led from the court after that sentencing protesting I have never had sex with a horse. In the recent trial Ridgeway again maintained he had no sexual fascination with horses and denied having had sex with Honey. Recorder Greaney said: I am quite satisfied that you have a deep seated sexual interest in horses and ponies that you struggle to control and which you were unable to control in 1990 and 2016. There is a very high risk you will seek to have sex with a horse or pony in the future. He said police had serious concerns about him if disturbed in that situation and he believed had Honeys owner been alone rather than with her husband she too might have been attacked. UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR HORSE DEATHS BUT WANTS TO START RESCUE RANCH An Ogema man under investigation for the starving death of three horses in his care has a Go Fund Me site seeking 10,000 to create a family horse rescue ranch. Michael E. Dahl, a White Earth spiritual leader and Ojibwe teacher at Detroit Lakes High School, set up the still-active Go-Fund-Me site on Sept. 25, 2015 and has so far received donations of 841 towards his 10,000 goal. Dahl did not return a message left on his cell phone voice mail. He has been accused by a former horse-breeder of letting three horses under his care starve to deathincluding a 2-year-old filly that was descended from the great race horse Secretariat, who won the Triple Crown. Horse breeder Amber Shaide of Fargo says she gave one of the horses to Dahl as a spiritual gift, another he reportedly got from a horse rescue organization and the other he was charged with taking care of for its owner while she was away. White Earth tribal police are investigating the horse deaths, according to the Becker County Sheriffs Office. Any charges would be brought in Becker County District Court. Heres some of what Dahl wrote on his Go-Fund-Me site: Those of you that dont know me, I will do my best to tell you a little bit about myself and my endeavors. I am Michael Dahl and I am OjibweAnishinaabe from the White Earth Reservation. I am a community man, meaning that i spend most of my time in my community and doing whatever I can to make it a better place. I am also a horse lover and have been drawn to this place because it has 10 acres of land and room for pastures for my horses and a couple more. My dream is to turn this place into a family horse rescue ranch someday, so when a horse that needs to be rescued comes, a family would be able to assist in the recuperations and preparations for that horse to be adopted out. This would also be an opportunity for the family to experience a triumph together and be able to work thru some of the tragedies and hardships that I had sat with them thru previously. When the horse is ready to be adopted, the family would have the option to adopt the horse themselves and then be able to assist in the upkeep of the horse and the ranch to help defray the costs of upkeep and eventually bringing back and revitalizing the relationship with horses and our people. This is the long term dream. The three horses were found dead at the site of the proposed horse rescue ranch near Strawberry Lake late last month. One of the horses was ridden in the 2015 Love Water Not Oil Ride held by Honor the Earth, said Executive Director Winona LaDuke. We are devastated to hear that this has happened, Honor the Earth Board Co-chair Shannon Martin said in a news release. The Michael Dahl we knew was a kind person with commitments to his family, animals and community. I cant believe this type of cruelty was perpetrated. He said Dahl is no longer associated with Honor the Earth. Honor the Earth has held four horse rides along the proposed Enbridge pipeline routes, and has participated in ceremonial and spiritual horse rides against the Keystone XL pipeline and the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline. Spiritual horse rides continue to be central to many Nations, who have hosted the Big Foot Memorial Ride (commemorating the 300 mile ride of Chief Big Foots band, which culminated in the Wounded Knee massacre), the Dakota 38 plus 2 Ride, and many more spiritual rides. Honor the Earth says it will continue to support culturally-based work with horses, and on the reservation. Horses are healing animals, I have seen them many times help children, and many people who have experienced trauma, and I am continuously grateful to the horse nation, said LaDuke. This last years horse ride included a ride from Standing Rock to Tioga, the route of the proposed Dakota Access pipeline. She said if Dahl is ultimately found responsible for the horse deaths, it will be a mystery why he didnt ask for help. I have taken care of Michaels horses before when he was without money to care for his horses, LaDuke said. He could have easily asked me for help. To me, this is like killing a relative. We expect those responsible to be held accountableHonor the Earth extends condolences to the horse nation and the White Earth people for this sorrowful act. 15 HORSES FOUND DEAD IN TRIMBLE COUNTY TRIMBLE COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several dead horses were found Wednesday on a farm in Trimble County. Henry County Animal Control arrived to the home on Perkinson Lane and saw three horse carcasses from the driveway. A search warrant was issued, and animal control found the skeletal remains of 12 other horses and many rabbits on the property. Its a mess. We found more than what we thought we would find, said Dan Flinkfelt with Henry County Animal Control. You hear about it, and you dont think it is going to happen in your area. Then once it comes across, it is a huge shock. Officials tell WDRB they initially arrived to the rented home for a probation check. Twelve other horses on the property were clearly malnourished. The sheriffs office brought in several large hay bales for the horses, since there was no food in their large pasture. Investigators are not sure how long the animals were without food or water. A rescue group with Windy Meadows Equine Center arrived on scene shortly before 5 p. m. and started rounding up the remaining horses to take to their 300-acre farm in Oldham County. All the horses were immediately check by a veterinarian. Well do a slow feed-back, which is grass hay, plain ole hay and water, and you will see a huge change, said Ellie Troutman, one of the rescue workers. The owner of property could face more than 35 counts of animal cruelty and improperly disposing of a carcass and could face a year in jail for each count. GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KXII) -- Another horse shot and killed Sunday in Grayson County, just five miles away from where a horse shooting happened last week. This is now the fourth report from this area in the last five months. Without any suspects, people in the horse community near the Grayson and Cooke County line said they are hoping their teamwork, and a special investigator now looking into these crimes, will help everyone get to the bottom of it. Gosh somethings going on here, we need to get together and we need to figure this out, neighbor Susan Johnson said, who also owns horses. This is a clear case of someone being malicious and trying to shoot the animals, Special Ranger Troy McKinney said. A multi-thousand dollar Arabian horse, shot and killed. It happened off Highway 377, just outside of Whitesboro. The owner did not want to interview, but said he found his horse lying dead on the ground Sunday morning. Its news that neighbor Susan Johnson is not taking lightly. This is a travesty towards animals, which it should never happen like this, but this might be something greater, Johnson said. Last Tuesday, someone hopped the fence on a Collinsville property, walked through the barn and shot the youngest horse right in the head. At the end of August, another horse was shot dead at a Gainesville home. Its very disconcerting, but what I love about it though is its a tight knit group of people, people are communicating, horse people are coming together in support, Johnson said. The horse community is now working to piece the info together on Facebook and they are hoping a ranger with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association can help. Really thats what we specialize in is livestock, Special Ranger McKinney said. So therefore, maybe we can shed some light on some stuff that the sheriffs department or police department is not aware of. McKinney said hell be helping local agencies with these investigations. We want to get out that this is not going to be tolerated in this county, nor will it be tolerated in this state. McKinney said the crime is a state jail felony, punishable by up to two years in prison. The Grayson County Sheriffs Office is investigating but they do not yet know how this shooting happened or who did it. It is still unknown at this time if any of the shootings are related. HORSE HEALTH F. E.I. TAKES ACTION OVER 7 POSITIVES AND HORSE DEATHS IN DUBAI The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) have announced a series of measures aimed at addressing concerns over horse welfare in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after revealing that seven horses have tested positive for banned substances. The measures were also taken by the governing body following the death of seven horses in the past four weeks at events in the country, including at one FEI competition. There will now be a requirement for stables involved in equine fatalities to provide full medical history for each horse and any medication administered, as well as details of the horses nutritional programmes and training schedules, including the methods used, the hours of training and distances covered. A study will also examine each endurance course in the region, including a detailed assessment of track conditions. Inspections will take place at all remaining endurance events in the 2017 season in the country, with an expert panel of course specialists and experienced veterinarians, including the FEI Veterinary Director. Working directly with local Organising Committees to investigate equine injuries will also be carried out. The FEI said there will be increased sanctions for those responsible for injury to horses, including imposing maximum permissible fines of 15,000 per offence and penalty points. An expanded scope of individuals that can be held accountable will also be introduced, which will include trainers and veterinarians. I asked the UAE National Federation to urgently put in place measures that would specifically address the situation in the UAE and we welcome the speed with which they have responded to these very serious issues, said Sabrina Ibez, FEI secretary general. We have already expressed our concerns that the fatal bone fractures we are seeing in the UAE are possibly the result of over-training and are likely to be pre-existing injuries that havent been given sufficient time to heal. The studies that the FEI is undertaking and which will be first presented to the Sports Forum and then in more depth during the Endurance Forum in Barcelona on 23 and 24 May will help determine the causes so that actions can be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The new senior management at the UAE National Federation, who met with the FEI President last month, is far more engaged and transparent than the previous administration. We are hopeful that, through their continuing cooperation with the FEI, together we will make dramatic improvements in addressing the causes of these injuries and the high levels of positives. This is something that needs to be done from the inside out and, while we can and will help from an educational perspective, there needs to be a willingness to improve from within and that now seems to be the case. A session dedicated to risk factors and bone injuries will take place at the FEI Sports Forum in Lausanne during April, with the initial findings of the Global Injuries Endurance Study, conducted by Dr Tim Parkin and Dr Euan Bennet of Glasgow University, set to be presented. Dr Chris Whitton from the University of Melbourne will also present on bone fatigue. Ibez stated that if there is a clear consensus on immediate actions to be taken, she will propose the use of emergency procedures to speed up the implementation of new rules. A series of meetings with trainers and team veterinarians will be hosted by the FEI in the UAE specifically to address the high level of catastrophic injuries in the region. The seven doping cases, which were announced today, have come as a result of competitions at the Al Wathba venue in Abu Dhabi, with the positive tests occurring after four different endurance events. Each of the horses tested positive for four prohibited substances: the stimulant caffeine and its metabolites theophylline, theobromine and paraxanthine. Under the FEI Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Rules, caffeine, theobromine and theophylline are listed as controlled medication and specified substances. The first two act as stimulants, while theophylline is used for the treatment of asthma and various respiratory diseases. Paraxanthine, another stimulant, is considered a banned substance under FEI rules. The first case came at a 120 kilometre ladies ride on November 26, with the horse Rafik de Kerpoint, ridden by Amy Louise McAuley, testing positive for all four substances. The horses Castlebar Lightning, Intisaar and Mraseel were found with the same substances at a 120km ride on December 17. They were ridden by Saeed Sultan Shames Al Maamri, Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum and Sheikh Sh Hamed Dalmook Al Maktoum respectively. Mraseel would also test positive for flumetasone, a corticosteroid which is used in the treatment of skin disorders. The four substances were again detected in a sample of the horse Salam Banquetol, which was ridden to second place in the 120km event on December 24 by Abdulla Ghanim Al Marri. Tom Jones TE and Aspenview Amir also provided samples with the substances present, with the horses ridden by Abdulla Ghanim Al Marri and Saeed Ahmad Jaber Al Harbi respectively at a 120km event on January 14. The FEI have confirmed the seven athletes and trainers Ismail Mohd, Khalifa Ghanim Al Marri and Mohd Ahmed Ali Al Subose have all been provisionally suspended from January 30, when they were notified of the sanction. All seven horses have been suspended for a two-month period. It is not the first time concerns have been made in the UAE, with Dubai stripped of the hosting rights for the 2016 World Endurance Championships after the Emirates Equestrian Federation (EEF) was suspended. The FEI announced the suspension due to major horse welfare issues in March 2015, but the sanction was lifted later that year, following the signing of a legally binding agreement in which the national body guaranteed horse welfare would be fully respected with FEI Rules enforced stringently at endurance events. The governing body stated last April that there had been hard work and progress in the Gulf country but deemed that there is still too much work to be done to ensure horse safety at the World Endurance Championships. Abdul Aziz Sheikh, the former head of the EEF Endurance Department, was suspended from acting as an FEI official or having any involvement in FEI activities at a national or international level for 18 months in March. He was one of three officials sanctioned after consistently failing to address FEI rules, while five riders were suspended following gross offences last February. Other allegations against the country included ghost-registered horses, with results duplicated from earlier events. No American animal is more iconic than the horse. From colonizing the West through harsh terrain, to being used in wartime during land battles, to becoming the mode of transportation before the invention of the internal combustion engine, weve grown as a nation riding on the backs of horses. Having taken so much from them over the centuries, the very least we could do in modern times is protect horses from cruelty. This is a story about an unexpected hero who is dedicating his life to doing just that. Marty Irby grew up on a family farm in southern Alabama. In his community, horse enthusiasts flocked to the Tennessee walking horse industry, so he became involved at an early age. He began riding in competitions at the age of four and eventually won eight world championships and one world grand champion title. After graduating from college and managing the countrys largest walking horse breeding farm, Irby earned himself a board seat at the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association, the industrys biggest trade group. A few years later, he became the youngest president in the organizations history. The association advocated for the players and companies within the industry and viewed animal advocates as a threat to their way of life, rather than an ally in protecting horses. The animal advocates pressed for reforms and for an end to a practice known as soring. Soring involves intentionally inflicting pain on the horses hooves to force an exaggerated gait in the show ring. When animal advocates expressed concerns about this mistreatment, the association viewed its role as protecting the industry against those allegations. Irby carried on this tradition for a time. It was how previous association leaders had mentored him, and it was what his community wanted him to stand for. But he knew something wasnt right. He began to witness improper practices perpetrated against the horses. He started becoming more aware of the rampant, mostly hidden atrocities in the industry. The most egregious is the hidden, yet standard practice of soring. As Irby could no longer deny, horse trainers, behind closed doors, were applying caustic chemicals like mustard oil, diesel fuel and kerosene to the horses legs and feet. Another technique they use is to cut deeply into the horses hoof and tightly nail on a shoe. This creates agonizing pain in every step the horse takes, causing them to barely touch the ground when they step. This may make their walk appear majestic, but actually, the horses are trying desperately to protect their throbbing, burning feet. An investigator with The Humane Society of the United States recorded a horse named Play Something Country, lying down in his stall groaning in pain 40 minutes after a chemical substance had been applied to his front legs. Other horses have died after suffering colic likely brought on by the pain and stress of soring. Irby couldnt take knowing what was happening to these poor horses any longer. He fought for changes from within the system and when that didnt succeed, he did something that would forever change his life he became a whistleblower. He spoke out in the media about the dark world of horse soring, and traveled to Washington, D. C. to testify in Congress in favor of legislation that would crack down on this abuse: the Prevent All Soring Tactics Act. This decision to speak out against his own industry, his own community, came with a heavy price. Marty Irbys brave act cost him the most special relationships in his life. It led to his divorce and the destruction of his relationship with his father. The Tennessee walking horse community, a part of his life since birth, excommunicated him from its ranks. He even faced death threats. Irby eventually accepted a position at the arch nemesis of the breeders association he once led: The Humane Society of the United States, where he works with family farmers and horse advocates to speak up for horses and other animals in statehouses and on Capitol Hill. His pursuit to finally get the protections for horses continues. Irbys leadership, as well as undercover investigations, celebrity campaigns and the support of more than 300 House and Senate members, is keeping this issue front and center in government. Hes working with family farmers and agriculture leaders all across the country to advance the interests of farmers who are pursuing more humane methods of farming, protecting rural communities and fighting factory farming. It took courage and a healthy dose of self-reflection for Irby to confront years of belief and values, especially while doing so triggered such negative personal repercussions. His journey is also a reminder to all of us that we never know who might be the next person to take a life-altering pivot. Owners of Horses, read this this A report published in the Equine Veterinary Journal presents evidence for marsh mallow (Malva parviflora) poisoning causing myocardial disease and myopathy in four horses. Marsh mallow (other names include small-owered mallow, cheeseweed, little mallow, Egyptian mallow) is found around the world, including parts of Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The plant is harvested from the wild for use as food and in traditional medicine. However, an example of how something beneficial in small amounts can be dangerous in excess is provided by the report from Australia. Four horses from the same farm developed severe muscle tremor, rapid heart rate, sweating and periods of recumbency leading to death or euthanasia. The signs resembled those of Atypical (or Seasonal Pasture) Myopathy, but none of the known culprits (Acer spp sycamore trees) was present. In fact, the pasture was practically bare, apart from an extensive covering of marshmallow. The horses had been receiving supplementary hay, but a week before the onset of signs this had been reduced to a minimal amount. Dr Jenni Bauquier of the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, University of Melbourne, and colleagues, describe the clinical signs, and the subsequent investigations. They performed post-mortem examinations on three of the horses, which revealed acute, multifocal cardiac and skeletal muscle necrosis. Serum samples from two cases contained malvalic and sterculic acids. Neither was detected in serum from 10 healthy control animals. Malvalic and sterculic acids, which are cyclopropene fatty acids, are thought to be the main toxic components of the M parviflora, and probably act by interfering with fatty acid oxidation. They are found in all parts of the plant, but concentrations are particularly high in immature seeds. Poisoning in the cases included in the report occurred when the mature fruit containing seeds were present on the plant and there was little other food available. Although the horses were in reasonable body condition (condition score 49), the authors suggest that negative energy balance (caused by withdrawal of supplementary feeding) was a significant factor in the development of clinical toxicosis. When energy intake is inadequate, fat is mobilized to provide energy through the beta-oxidation pathway. Interfering with that pathway, which is how the toxins are thought to exert their effect, would thus have a more dramatic effect than under conditions of normal energy balance. The authors conclude that ingestion of M. parviora is probably related to development of acute myopathy and cardiomyopathy in horses in negative energy balance, due to its effects on fatty acid oxidation. They recommend that this plant should be controlled in areas where horses and other species are grazing, especially if adequate supplementary feed is unavailable How does Your Equestrian Centre Rate. TETHERED TO A TREE TO DIE ALMA, Ga. - A south Georgia community is outraged and heartbroken after a horse that was tethered to a tree for several days died Wednesday because it got tangled in the rope, according to Alma, Georgia, residents. Just days before the horse died, a person, who wished to remain anonymous, took a video showing the animal getting tangled in the rope and nearly falling. The person also claimed that food and water was not within reach. One of the caretakers denied that the horse had ever been neglected, saying the horse was sick and died of old age. But people who saw the horse alive disagreed, saying theyre furious that nothing is being done. When I came out here a while ago, I almost burst into tears and, probably, before the day is over, I probably will. I just want something done, said Gail Fiveash, with the Blueberry Animal Rescue Klub. A week ago, Fiveash said a friend sent her photos and videos of the horse, asking if she could help. In the state of Georgia, its illegal to have a horse tethered to anything longer than 24 hours, and there must be water within reach. But according to Fiveash, two horses on the property were tethered for at least a week. Theres actual videos of the horse being tied to the tree. Theres photos of him being tangled in the roping and shots of him after he was tangled and fell, Fiveash said. On Thursday, News4Jax spoke with Travis, one of the animal caretakers on the property, who insisted the horse died of old age. The horse was never abused. We took care of him and all that. Even the sheriff came out and investigated, and he said he died of old age, he said. The Bacon County Sheriffs Office was called out and the responding officer saw food and water. But people living nearby said that was put there after the horse died. In the graphic video, which News4Jax has chosen not to show, the tether wrapped around the legs of the deceased horse can visibly be seen. The Georgia Department of Agriculture did go out to the property and gave the caretakers 24 hours to give the horse a proper burial and get shelter built for the remaining horse and donkey. The state department said the well-being of the two animals is its number one priority now. The person who took the photos and videos plans on handing them over to the Sheriffs Office in hopes that the footage provides proof that the law was violated. The Department of Agriculture sent the following statement to News4Jax: The issue at hand regarding the horse that is deceased would be a local law enforcement issue. The Georgia Department of Agriculture is charged by law with the responsibility of overseeing the health and well-being of animals. Our priority at the time is the remaining animals at the facility and to ensure they are properly cared for as well as the proper burial of the deceased animal. FIRST A PIT BULL AND THEN THE KNIFE - ALL IN THE SAME WEEK SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A mini-horse name Princess was attacked twice in a week first by a pit-bull, and then by someone with a knife. Right now the Shelby County Sheriffs Office isnt saying if the two cases are connected, but they do have a suspect. However, many around town are questioning why someone would try and hurt such a harmless animal. If youve ever driven down Jail Hill Road in Shelbyville you may have caught a glimpse of Princess, the mini-horse. People stop by and want to ride the horse, or neighbors will have birthday parties, and Ill take the horse to their yard and theyll play with it a little bit, William Bruns said. However, when William Bruns came home last week he saw a horrific scene. I had a pit-bull attacking my horse, and we couldnt get it off of her, said Bruns. We had to end up shooting the dog to get her off of my horse. KSP and Shelby Co. Animal Control cleared Bruns for shooting the dog, but that was far from the end of it. Somebody showed up at my door saying it was my dog, and they werent happy that I killed the dog, Bruns said. While Bruns didnt think much of it at the time he quickly discovered someone took issue with his horse. Tuesday afternoon I came out and found my horse had been stabbed twice, and the knife broke off in her just behind her rib cage, Bruns said. Thankfully Princess survived the attack, but this time Bruns called the Shelby County Sheriffs Office. We have some things that were looking at, said Maj. Jason Rice of the Shelby Co. Sheriffs Office. Of course we were able to retrieve the knife. Hopefully we can get some evidence off of the knife itself. This was done intentionally, said Bruns. I think its real sick. I think its inhumane. You know just to come and stab a horse because you might have a problem with your neighbor thats pretty bad. The Sheriffs office is hoping they can get finger prints off the knife. Once those results they will send their findings to the Commonwealth Attorney who will decide whether Animal Cruelty charges are appropriate. A horse welfare charity is calling for action to stop the increasing number of dead horses being dumped in Derbyshire. Charity Help for Horses is concerned by the growing number of horses which are being left for dead across the county and says that people are frightened to speak out because they are fearful of being targeted themselves. The charity is urging authorities in Derbyshire to start enforcing the law before the problem gets out of hand. Chairman of Help for Horses, Janice Dixon, said: The dumping of dead horses in Derbyshire is a big problem which is being hidden. Many people seem to be frightened about speaking up because they are scared about what might happen to them. Legislation was introduced in 2009 stating all horses must be microchipped to ensure they can be correctly identified. If an owner fails to do so, they can be fined up to 5,000. However, Janice says this law is not being properly enforced in Derbyshire. If they enforce the law we would not have this problem with all these dead horses being dumped, she said. This really needs changing. I want to appeal to the trading standards in Derbyshire and the crime commissioner to set up some protocols in place. She added: There needs to be a hard-hitting approach to stop what is happening. It would not take that long to get the word out there. Its not like we have to pass a law through Parliament because it is already there - it just needs enforcing. A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: In the last 12 months we have been notified of two incidents of dead horses being dumped illegally in the county, but in neither instance were the horses microchipped. We have received five other notifications relating to eight horses that have died and on each occasion they have been disposed of appropriately and in accordance with regulations covering the safe disposal of animals. While we have not been contacted by Janice Dixon we would welcome a discussion with her about her concerns and look at how we can work more closely with agencies including the police and the RSPCA. We know that seeing a dead horse in a field or at the side of the road is extremely distressing and are very keen to tackle this and bring perpetrators to justice. HORSE GURU FOUND GUILTY OF CRUELTY A man who claimed to be a self-taught horse whisperer and trainer has been convicted of animal cruelty. Jonathan Hurst was found guilty of two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a pony at a yard in Hampshire. The female pony - called Tanzin - was left with absolutely shocking spilt tongue and eye injuries which were not treated by a vet, the RSPCA said. Hurst, of Kings Elm, Barton Stacey, was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work and fined 300. The 26-year-old was sentenced at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on Thursday. He offered his services to Tanzins owner after portraying himself as a horse guru with the skills to transform even the most wilful horse, the RSPCA said. The filly suffered significant injuries while under the care of Hurst at a yard in Longparish Road, Wherwell, from 9 March to 14 March 2016, the animal charity added. Callous RSPCA inspector Jan Edwards said: Tanzin had been left to suffer with absolutely shocking injuries. I have never seen anything like the state of her tongue. Its callous to leave an animal to suffer in this way without proper veterinary treatment. She added Tanzins owner screamed when she first saw her ponys greyed out eye, fearing it had been blinded. Tanzin had refused to eat before the gash on her tongue was discovered, the RSPCA said. CONNOR MCGREGOR WAS HE NAKED. Stokes, 58, Danville, ended up inverted alongside U. S. 231 in northern Owen County Thursday evening. The driver died at the scene of the accident. QUINCY A 58-year-old Hendricks County man was fatally injured Thursday evening in a one-vehicle accident on U. S. 231, about three miles south of the Putnam-Owen county line. Franklin C. Stokes, of Danville, was ejected from the passenger side window, Indiana State Police at the Bloomington Post reported. Stokes was driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck with an attached horse trailer, heading northbound in the 9700 block of U. S. 231. For unknown reasons, police said, the truck left the roadway, struck a guardrail and became inverted, all before detaching from the trailer and coming to final rest. Stokes was unresponsive as emergency personnel arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene. No seat belt was in use at the time of the crash. The accident reportedly occurred just after 5:30 p. m. The highway was closed for more than two hours. The horse trailer was empty when the crash occurred, police said. These fungi can survive the production process and help postpone the need for anthelmintic treatment. The research has been published in the journal Veterinary Parasitology. Jos ngel Hernndez and co-workers manufactured pellets containing spores of two fungi that have been shown to have activity against roundworm parasites. Mucor circinelloides has ovicidal activity against the large roundworm (Parascaris equorum), and liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica). Duddingtonia flagrans acts on free living larval stages, trapping them with its adhesive hyphae. Three groups, each of seven indigenous Raza Pura Galega mares, housed in separate meadows, were used. At the start of the study, all horses had gt500 strongyle eggs per gram (epg) in the faeces. Some also had Parascaris equorum eggs. The first group was treated with ivermectin and then fed spore-containing pellets daily. The second group was treated with ivermectin but received pellets without the fungal spores. The third group received pellets without the fungal spores, and was not given ivermectin. The researchers report that, in fecal samples taken from mares receiving the spore-containing pellet, the strongyle egg count remained below 300 EPG until the end of the study (15 months). Consequently, these mares did not need deworming again throughout this period. In contrast, the mares that had been treated with ivermectin alone, started producing strongyle eggs again after 8 weeks after treatment, and soon followed a pattern similar to the untreated controls. No P. equorum eggs were detected throughout the study (15 months), in any of the mares that had received ivermectin, but they were seen intermittently in the untreated animals. No undesirable side effects on horses fed on pellets containing fungal spores were recorded. Incorporating the fungal spores into the pellets did not appear to affect palatability, as the mares never refused to eat the pellets containing the spores. The results show it may be possible to reduce the risk of infection by gastrointestinal nematodes by feeding horses pellets containing a blend of spores of an ovicidal fungus (M. circinelloides) and a larval-trapping species (D. flagrans). FAILURE OF IVERMECTIN NOW NOT ELIMINATING PINWORMS Equine pinworms (Oxyuris equi) may be becoming more of a problem. In particular, there have been reports of failure of the macrocyclic lactone, ivermectin, to eliminate these parasites. The worms live in the terminal reaches of the large intestine, with the females depositing eggs around the anus of infected horses. As the eggs are not passed in the faeces, infections are rarely identified on routine faecal examination. Although they cause minimal damage to the intestinal tract, the presence of the worms eggs on the perineum results in irritation and damage to the tail. Researchers in France, led by Guillaume Sall at the Universit de Tours in Nouzilly, report the failure of ivermectin to control O. equi infection in an experimental Welsh pony herd. They conducted two small scale trials. In the first, six ponies with patent oxyuris infection despite recent treatment with moxidectin, were monitored for 21 days after treatment with ivermectin. The research team monitored egg production by adhesive tape sampling of the perianal region, and looked for adult worms in the faeces. Oxyuris equi eggs were detected in half of the ponies within 21 days after treatment. The following year, six ponies infected with Oxyuris equi were divided into groups for treatment with ivermectin, pyrantel or fenbendazole. The response to treatment was monitored weekly over five weeks. The researchers found that Ivermectin treated ponies continued to excrete eggs throughout the study period. In contrast, both fenbendazole and pyrantel seemed to be effective, preventing oxyuris egg production within 8 and 14 days respectively. Because of the small size of the study, it was not possible to make any firm conclusions. However, it serves as a reminder that, even though cyathostomins are now widely resistant to fenbendazole, the drug still has a place in strategic treatment for specific parasites like oxyuris. LETTER OF THE DAY HE RIPS AWAY WHEN ENTERING THE PADDOCK Not sure if you even address this kind of query as I have come upon your site whilst researching the building of an arena. We have recently acquired a horse who is very problematic to let go off of the halter (he came to us with this vice). He is fine to lead, handle on the ground, shoe, float, etc, but the moment you go to let him go in the paddock, he anticipates and even before the halter is off, charges off. We have tried various types of halters and left the clip undone some times as we thought it may be the click of releasing the clip that sets him off. The anticipation of being let go in a paddock (doesnt matter how big or small, with another horse of not) is becoming so problematic that I refuse to handle him. We have tied him up in the paddock (for a few minutes( and he stands and will then let us take the halter off, without a problem, but time constraints dont always allow this. If you dont put him on a halter (or for that matter hold on to him in any way) he will happily follow another horse into a paddock without all the dramas, but this isnt always practical. He is a 9yr OTT TB Gelding. Any advice as to how we can re-educate him Yes, I know these ones :) Met a few of them. In fact, they are very dangerous to the Handler for I have seen People get kicked in the Head as they let go with one out of pure excitement. There are a number of things You can do. Dont be using a Pony Club Halter or Lead Rope of course but a ROPE HALTER and a 12 foot PROPER Lead Rope. Walk the Horse to the Paddock, turn it around to face the Gate. Have your Old Halter on, over the top of a NH Rope Halter. Have the Rope hooked onto the Rope Halter. Remove the old Halter from over the top of the Rope Halter and step back away. BE DOWN THE END OF THE ROPE and as the Horse charges off, on the big LOOPY rope, suddenly and violently rip it around and stop it. ( May be requiring a Male Handler) Repeat this a couple of times. The Horse will soon get the message. Do the same but have a 6 metre rope on the Rope Halter, to give more time. Wear Gloves. (dont wrap ropes around bodily parts. Repeat the same deal. Walk Horse into Paddock, Face it to the Gate and simultaneously STEP BACK and drop the rope. Leaving the rope and ROPE HALTER on the Horse, hoping he treads on it. By the way, let it wear that set up in a yard, regularly, for an hour or two, to LIGHTEN UP THE FACE and learn to give rather than fight. ( Your Horse isnt Halter broken well enough.) Hobble Train your Horse. Go to the Paddock, Face the Gate, install stockmans hobbles, remove Halter, let horse go. ) It wont take long. Go and remove hobbles when ready. and I could give You more radicle methods as well but that is all you should need. I once met a Pony. Whilst leading, it would suddenly and without warning, charge off forward, past You and even though it was only 12 Hands, strong Men could not stop it. It caught me twice in a row. It had been through many Owners and was heading to its Death. Royal Show Hack too. I was its last hope. It would repeat the same trick, on the lunge so I decided to do something I had never done before and never done since due to the high danger of injury, I took Him to the Round Pen and let the Gate slightly ajar. I put a 50 foot rope on HIm, tied to the 400mm Gate Post. True to form, he did a runner and shot out, heading for the front Gate at Gainsborough, until he hit the end of the rope where he did a somersault with pike that would have scored well at the Olympics and landed on the broad of his back He never did it again and went on to win at the Melbourne Royal :) Hi there, Thanks for all that information. We were also considering hobbles, but this was basically going to be our last resort. For the last three weeks, hes maintained a schedule of 5 minutes (total) lunging per day for 5 consecutive days When I started him out, he was only doing 2 minutes per day with a day or two between lunging sessions. The horse found a new owner, who spent time on ground and he is now doing well in endurance. When I started to ride him again he was still lacks forward so I started to try different things thats when I changed to a half breed and work out if I removed my legs by lifting them away from the saddle he tends to walk out more this happens in all strides. besides this he has started standing with crossed back legs especially after hacking out I dont do arena work on him as he turns off more, he also turns out his back toes on assorts of angles He brings the off hind in under him self each gait which makes him crocked. drifting to left. He feels like he is dragging him self along with the front legs and finds it hard to come from behind. He is a puzzle as he looks well and doesnt seem to have any back of leg issues. PHOTO OF THE DAY NEWS OF THE DAY HORSE DEALERS SENT TO GOAL Two dealers and a vet who worked together to con buyers into purchasing unsuitable horses have been sent to prison. Aniela Jurecka, Charlotte Johnson and vet David Smith (pictured, below) were each sentenced to two-and-a-half years jail for conspiracy to commit fraud. They will serve half behind bars and the remainder on licence. The packed courtroom heard details of the collusion, which saw dangerous, lame and unsuitable horses sold to unsuspecting buyers. Often these horses were for children, teenagers or novice adults. The evidence is so serious that a non-custodial sentence cannot be justified, said his hon judge Joy. Picture by Kent Messenger Group Johnson broke down in tears during the sentencing and Jurecka wiped her eyes while the judge gave his summing up. Each of the defendants barristers gave character testimonials in favour of the trio. Following this, judge Joy summed up the proceedings and gave detail of the sentencing guidelines as well as how he had taken into account statements in support of the defendents. But he highlighted to the court the damaging impact the trios actions had had on not only their victims, but also the wider publics perception of vets, dealers and the equine industry. The animals were said to be like unexploded bombs, he told the court. But they had been advertised, presented and certified as docile and suitable for beginners. That was wicked and dangerous and criminal. Jurecka, 28, of Prospect Place, Collier Street in Tonbridge Johnson, 28, of Tollgate Way, Sandling, and 66-year-old Smith, whose address was given at the time of the trial as The Street, Finglesham, Deal, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation on 13 June, following a 14-week trial at the same court. They were arrested after a large-scale operation, which involved Kent Police, Trading Standards and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). The court heard how Jurecka and Johnson advertised horses for sale in equestrian publications. Text messages seen by detectives suggested the pair were drugging horses to cover up poor behaviour and lameness. The two women would then recommend vet Smith, who would give the horses a clean bill of health. In many cases, the paperwork for the horses was altered. Horses were sold for between 1,950 and 5,700. On 31 May 2013, police executed a warrant at Lakeview Veterinary Centre in Capel Le Ferne, where Smith was practising. They seized information from computers, which uncovered poor record-keeping by Smith, in particular surrounding the supply of Modecate a long-acting sedative. Several text messages sent to Smith by the dealers were also uncovered by the detectives where Jurecka asked Smith for Modecate and sedative Sedalin. Due to the number of victims coming forward, the investigation was a complex and large enquiry. The trio were charged with fraud in January 2015. RSPCA SHOOTS 11 HEALTHY HORSES The RSPCA ordered the killing of 11 healthy horses after they were rescued from appalling conditions, despite the fact some could have been rehomed, a Mail on Sunday investigation can reveal. Astonishingly, Britains largest animal charity had the horses shot but went on to claim thousands of pounds for stabling expenses as well as veterinary bills for animals which were already dead, leaked documents show. The scandal is the latest in a series of controversies to engulf the charity, which critics say has lost sight of its core mission to protect animals. 1. Of 14 horses signed over to the RSPCAs care, only two were rehomed the rest dispatched by a slaughtermans bullet. A mare was shot on arrival after breaking its leg while being transported to a rescue yard by the RSPCA. The charity then claimed 200,000 in prosecution costs, which included more than 10,000 in spurious stabling charges, but later withdrew the claim, blaming an administrative error. Wiltshire Air Ambulance came to her aid at Marston Meysey and the speedy response of the helicopter ensured she was at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, quickly to receive specialist care. Suzanna suffered a spinal injury, head injury, and broke her back, pelvis, and shoulder, during the fall on July 26, 2012, and was in hospital for over 177 days. She was completely wheelchair bound for two years but can now use crutches as well as her wheelchair. She undergoes regular physiotherapy at the Injured Jockeys Fund Rehabilitation Centre at Oaksey House, Lambourn, and the Oxford Centre for Enablement. Before the accident Suzanna was competing in Eventing at 2 star (International) level as an amateur. She started riding again in July 2014 and competes at an advanced level in para and able-bodied dressage competitions. She has won two national para dressage titles, won at para international level, competed at Prix St George (high level able-bodied dressage test), was long-listed for the Rio Paralympics and she has also been selected onto the National Lottery World Class Programme. Her goal is to be selected to compete for Great Britain in the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020. Suzanna works in the pharmacy at BampW Equine Vets at Breadstone, Gloucestershire. Recalling her accident Suzanna, who lives near Sherston, near Malmesbury, said: Because of the severity of my injuries I needed the quickest response and Wiltshire Air Ambulance provided that. I can remember saying to the crew that I couldnt feel my legs or move them. The crew were so calm and reassuring. They assessed my injuries before flying me to hospital. If they hadnt got me to hospital quickly, the outcome could have been different. Suzanna is a volunteer with Wiltshire Air Ambulance and is backing the charitys airbase appeal. She said: Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a vital service that we couldnt do without, especially in rural locations, such as where I had my horse riding accident. Its new airbase at Semington will still enable the helicopter to reach all parts of Wiltshire in 11 minutes, as it currently does from its base in Devizes. Im so proud to be a volunteer with Wiltshire Air Ambulance, helping to spread the word about the lifesaving work it does. It is a charity and the fundraising and administrative team work so hard to keep the donations coming in to enable the helicopter to keep flying and saving lives. RUNAWAY HORSE The spooked animal broke free of its trap, wrecked a car, and left a bus stop at a 45 degree angle during its weekend rampage. The incident has led to calls for all animals on the road to be insured so innocent drivers arent left out of pocket. Ian Garner, whose Ford Fiesta suffered an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 of damage after being hit as he turned into Highfield Road at around noon on Saturday, said: I was not even going 15mph and the horse came at me. COUNTRY CORK - IRELAND - NEW BY LAWS THREATEN HORSE MARKETS Thats the claim from horse traders who say some of the bylaws drawn up by Cork County Council as part of new casual trading regulations are definitely non-runners. They say three of the bylaws in particular are unworkable. One proposes that horses may not be trotted at fairs while another states that no person under 16 can be in control of a horse at any time. The council also wants to introduce a licence fee for selling horses, making it the first local authority in the country to do so. Dermot OMahony, a senior member of the West Cork Horsebreeders Association, led a delegation to meet councillors where he and colleagues outlined their fears about the proposals. Ive been going to these fairs for 60 years and now they want us to get a licence. They just dont want us to go to fairs. It will spell the death knell for horses fairs, of which there are 10 around the county, including the famous Cahirmee Buttevant, Mr OMahony said. He said the council wants to confine each horse to a designated spot for the day, which would be impractical and it would be impossible to sell them unless prospective new owners see them trot. Cllr Christopher OSullivan, who organised the delegation, pointed out that some ponies may be only 12 hands, 2ins, or smaller, and can only be ridden by children under the age of 16. Younger members of horse breeding families have traditionally ridden small animals in front of prospective buyers. Trotting your horse and demonstrating how the horse moves is a huge part of making a sale. This is how fairs have operated for decades and I will be insisting this continues to be the case. These bylaws cannot be implemented in their current form, Cllr OSullivan said. He said horse fairs are part of the fabric of West Cork in particular. The Ballabuidhe fair in Dunmanway is centuries old and there is an age-old tradition of horse fairs in Rosscarbery, Bantry, Johnstown, and Leap village. They have always been held without the requirements for permits or licences and this has been one of the reasons for their long-lasting success. For many of these towns Fair Day is the busiest day of the year for many businesses. In some instances they are a tourist attraction in their own right, he added. Cllr OSullivan said that if council officials insist on introducing licences and fees he could guarantee that horse traders will go elsewhere to buy and sell horses. No other county has such bylaws which means we will be sending people outside the county to do business. Alternatively they will go to horse sales where there is less paper work required. I accept the bone fides of the council in making efforts to regulate casual trading. The Jackson Hole News amp Guide this week is reporting the remarkable survival story of Valentine, a 6-year-old pack horse that had fallen ill during the November hunting season and was basically left for dead in the the Bridger-Teton National Forest. DRUGS FOUND IN HORSE SADDLE PITTSBURG At least two people are facing federal charges related to allegedly trafficking methamphetamine into the Bay Area from Mexico after federal authorities seized a package containing 20 kilograms or about 44 pounds of the drug. The investigation started after federal agents intercepted a package heading to Pittsburg, with a return address in Guadalajara, Mexico. Inside the package, there was a saddle, but when federal investigators took apart the saddle, they found the meth hidden inside, according to a federal affidavit. So FBI agents came up with a plan: They replicated the package and the saddle, and sent an undercover agent disguised as a UPS driver to deliver it to a home on the 1100 block of Maple Street in Pittsburg. Then they surveilled the home and followed its occupants as they delivered the package to a woman named Mariela Solis. Solis was then seen taking the package to another man, identified as Victor Galaviz, who paid her 500, according to the federal affidavit. Thats when police swooped in, arresting Solis, Galaviz, and a third man who has not yet been charged. Solis and Galaviz were charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. They face up to 20 years in prison and a 1 million fine if convicted. Authorities interviewed several people allegedly part of the conspiracy. One of them refused to provide the name of the person who ordered the package, saying that person is part of the mafia and cartel, and that he feared retribution, court records show. The Fdration Equestre Internationale (FEI) Tribunal has issued its final decision in the case involving Pasha Syed Kamaal, DVM, of India, identified as support personnel in the 2012 equine anti-doping case involving the endurance horse Glenmorgan. Samples taken from the horse, who was ridden by HH Sheik Hazza bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in the CEI3 160 km at Al Wathba (UAE) on Feb. 10, 2012, returned positive for the banned substance propoxyphene, an opioid analgaesic, and its metabolite norpropoxyphene. In its final decision, the FEI Tribunal has imposed a two-year suspension on Kamaal as a member of the support personnel, in accordance with Article 169 of the FEI General Regulations and Article 10 of the Equine Anti-Doping Rules. The period of provisional suspension, effective from Nov. 16, 2015, has been credited against the period of ineligibility, meaning Kamaal will be suspended until Nov. 15, 2017. The tribunal also imposed a fine of CHF 2,500 and costs of CHF 1,000. Kamaal has 30 days from the date of notification (Jan. 13) to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The FEI Tribunal had previously imposed a 27-month suspension on HH Sheik Hazza as the person responsible. This was reduced to 18 months on appeal to the CAS, although the court upheld the FEIs principle of strict liability in the application of its equine anti-doping rules. During the FEI Tribunal and CAS proceedings, Kamaal said he had administered the product Fustex to the horse the night before the event. Fustex contains Propoxyphene, although it is not listed as an ingredient. Following the original case, the FEI issued a notice to stakeholders in July 2015 urging caution over the use of Fustex, an Argentinian product used to promote muscle growth. Every horse owner dreads seeing signs of lameness or discomfort in any horse, whether it is a backyard companion or a top-caliber sport horse. But for performance horses, one of the first questions many owners ask upon contacting a veterinarian about a problem is, Can the horse safely and comfortably return to work With cutting-edge technology, that question can be quickly and accurately answered. Many horses and ponies these days are overweight. The same holds true for cats and dogs. It is my experience that animals of normal weight have become so infrequent that many people worry the animals are too thin. Our society has become so accustomed to overweight animals that obesity is the new normal. However, excess fat is harmful. Plump ponies and roly-poly horses are prone to serious health issues. Unlike the workhorses of the past, modern horses are typically not required to put in consistent, heavy work. Confined to box stalls and small paddocks, the lifestyle of many pleasure horses mimics that of people. Both consume high-energy diets that far exceed nutritional requirements. Restricting them to stalls or small paddocks is like plunking them in front of the television for the night. The burst of activity that comes with an intensive workout does not fully combat the problems that arise when individuals are otherwise sedentary. Another contributing factor is nutrition. Modern pastures have been optimized to achieve weight gain in grazing cattle and sheep. But nature designed horses to spend most of their time grazing low-quality grasses. The hay and grain diets we feed the modern horse are the equine equivalent of a burger and fries. Then there is the issue of equating food with love. Feeding a hot bran mash or bucket of grain because the horse likes it, even though it doesnt need it from a nutritional standpoint, is likely to add excess weight. Trainers who use positive reinforcement techniques involving food rewards consider treats in the context of the horses nutritional requirements. Obvious problems associated with excess fat include poor performance and reduced endurance. Obesity is also associated with reproductive issues. Obese mares may have abnormal cycles and trouble delivering foals. There is also evidence to suggest that overweight mares give birth to larger foals, which may compound birthing troubles. One of the most serious effects of horse obesity is abnormal insulin metabolism, which can lead to future health conditions. The most notorious condition associated with obesity and insulin dysregulation is laminitis (also called founder). When all three conditions occur in the same horse, it is called equine metabolic syndrome. In addition to founder, affected horses develop abnormal fat deposits on the neck, creating a cresty neck. Laminitis is difficult to manage and can lead to euthanasia. Overweight horses are prone to developing benign fat tumours (called lipomas) in the tissue that supports the intestines. If these lipomas are suspended on a long stalk, they can wrap around portions of the gut, leading to severe colic that requires surgery. Given the heath concerns, it is important for owners to recognize when their animals are overweight. Scales, although not always available, provide an accurate assessment of body condition. Weight tapes are useful to estimate weight. Another popular approach is body condition scoring, which uses an objective scale to assess body fat deposits along the neck, withers, ribs, back and tail head. There are excellent charts available online that can help you evaluate where your horses are on this scale. Achieving optimum weight and body condition will require an honest look at your horses nutritional requirements and activity level. Decreasing high energy feeds, providing lower energy hay and increasing exercise will help with weight loss. The unnecessary feed and the cost to treat these serous health conditions make obesity an expensive situation. And because what we feed horses is under our control, management strategies to reduce obesity are also attainable goals. As such, the condition can cause major problems for Shetland breeding farms. But new genomic research has finally identified the responsible genes, a finding that could ultimately eliminate the diseases presence altogether. Our study has allowed us to discover the exact locations of the responsible mutations in the horse genome, said Carl-Johan Rubin, PhD, of the Science for Life Laboratory in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology at Uppsala University, in Sweden. Our hope now is that breeders will use this knowledge to get their breeding stock tested, so that no new individuals ever have to be born with this debilitating condition, he told The Horse. The condition, known by scientists as skeletal atavism, causes the radius and ulna andor the tibia and fibula (in the front and hind legs, respectively) to develop as separate bones, whereas in modern adult equids, these two bones are fused together, Rubin said. Affected ponies are born with splayed, crooked legs, which prevent them from moving correctly. Usually, owners have the foals euthanized. Were not sure exactly how common the disease is since we suspect its often underreported, given that its not something breeders want to publicize about their breeding stock since its a hereditary condition, said Rubin. But it does seem to happen fairly frequently, resulting in the loss of many individuals. In a multinational research project, scientists from Sweden and the United States worked together to map the genomes of affected Shetland ponies and compare them to those of healthy individuals. Their data led them to investigate a region of the genome that carries a gene called the short stature homeobox (SHOX) gene. Scientists originally gave it this name because when the gene is absent in humans, it causes people to be shorter than they would be normally. As a result of their findings, a DNA test is now available worldwide. Rubin said he recommends breeders at least have their breeding stallions tested, because there must be two copies of the genetic deletion (one from each parent) for the disease to appear in the foal. If the stallion does not carry the deletion, then even if the mare does, there is no risk that the foal will develop the atavism, he said. However, the foal could become a carrier if its mother passes on the deletion, he added. So tested mares as well could ensure that the deletion is ultimately eliminated entirely from the breeding stock. Not to be confused with dwarfism, which is caused by mutations in the aggrecan gene (ACAN), skeletal atavism can also occur in Miniature Horses due to the strong influence of Shetland genes in that breed, said Rubin. SKULL FRACTURES IN HORSE COMMON Accidental injuries can happen to any horse at any time, and a fairly common and usually catastrophic injury is trauma to the head resulting in fracture of the skull, writes veterinarian Dr Neil Williams. Horses often are victims of accidental injury. Their gregarious nature, social hierarchy, heightened flight response, and handling and confinement by humans puts them at increased risk of trauma. The head of a typical adult horse weighs more than 40 pounds (18kg). This, coupled with the long neck placing the head well outside the center of mass, causes the head to strike the ground with tremendous force during a fall. Also, the speed and strength of a horse can result in severe impact of the head against an object when rearing or running. Over a five-year period, the University of Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center has diagnosed 34 cases of skull fracture, with a yearly average of 6.8 cases. Accidental injuries can happen to any horse at any time, and a fairly common and usually catastrophic injury is trauma to the head resulting in fracture of the skull, writes veterinarian Dr Neil Williams. Horses often are victims of accidental injury. Their gregarious nature, social hierarchy, heightened flight response, and handling and confinement by humans puts them at increased risk of trauma. The head of a typical adult horse weighs more than 40 pounds (18kg). However Mulberry Park owner Anne Simmons said rumours the 19 ha Crouch Rd property, which boasts a 173-year-old home, was being sold to make way for a mosque were simply a joke. It has been purchased by a couple of high-profile, northeast personalities for a private residence, she said. It was misreported on a website it was being sold for a mosque. This is not correct. The centre has helped hundreds and hundreds of people over the years. I set it up 18 years ago. Its been very demanding (running the equestrian centre). The property will settle on the 20th, and we move out on the 16th of this month. Described as a substantial and significant equine lifestyle property by selling agents Country Estates, the near 50-acre Mulberry Park comes with a large character home, in-ground pool and quality shedding established for horses with many facilities. The property, which has catered for 30 horses each year over the past five years, boasts a stone, six bedroom home including cellar and attic and reportedly built back in 1843. The second living level is an extension of the original building and constructed about 116 years later. The property has been established as horse agistment and continues to provide its clients equine facilities of substantial and varying purposes, a biography by selling agent Country Estates reads. NEWS OF THE DAY FINALLY, LAWS ON TENNESSEE WALKING HORSES Pushed to act by a series of HSUS undercover investigations and a national campaign that attracted the support of more than 300 members of the U. S. House and Senate across the political spectrum, the U. S. Department of Agriculture today announced strict new rules to crack down on the barbaric practice of horse soring the intentional infliction of pain on the legs and hooves of show Tennessee walking horses and related breeds, to force them to perform the artificial, pain-based Big Lick gait. An enormous coalition of animal welfare groups, horse industry organizations, veterinary organizations, law enforcement, and others backed federal action, but ultimately credit goes to President Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for getting this done on their watch. This has been one of The HSUSs top federal priorities, and I am thrilled to pass on this news to you today. We will, however, have to be vigilant that President-elect Trump and a handful of opponents in Congress do not interfere with implementation of this rule meanwhile, well continue to press for federal legislation to build on the regulatory reforms, so the battle is not entirely over. As requested in a rulemaking petition submitted by HSUS attorneys with the assistance of the law firm Latham amp Watkins, the USDA rule, which was years in the making, bans the use of stacks and chains on Tennessee walking horses and racking horses (the breeds that have been chronic victims of soring). These medieval-looking devices accentuate the pain when chemicals are burned into the horses legs and their feet are injured with cutting and concealed hard objects. Injuring their feet and then forcing them to walk on four-inch stacks with chains banging against their sores creates the exaggerated gait prized by judges at some of the top horse shows. The rule also eliminates the failed industry self-policing program, and puts the USDA squarely in charge of enforcing the rules to eliminate these abuses. No other category of horse shows, for any other breeds, have needed laws and rules aimed at them. Its a testament to the ongoing scofflaw culture that pervades a segment of the Tennessee walking and racking horse show world. When you consider that the first major step in this process was taken more than 45 years ago, with Congress passing the Horse Protection Act of 1970 attempting to outlaw the practice but leaving loopholes that the horse soring crowd walked through almost every day you may have a sense of the countless hours devoted by reformers to deliver mercy to these horses, and to outlaw a practice that is as deplorable and intentional as dogfighting or cockfighting. The HSUS has been investigating and campaigning against the cruelty of horse soring since the late 1950s it is a concern nearly as old as The HSUS itself. The USDAs Office of Inspector General conducted a comprehensive two-year audit released in 2010 that exposed how trainers within the industry deviously evade detection and continue to use horrific practices to attain the Big Lick. The OIG concluded from its findings that in order to fix the continued abuse, an overhaul of the USDAs regulations to eliminate the flawed system of industry self-policing and stiffer penalties are vital and necessary. That OIG report provided an enormously important grounding for our national anti-soring campaign. U. S. lawmakers weighed in on the issue in a major way, with House and Senate bills introduced in the 113th and 114th Congresses, attracting enormous bipartisan support. Forty-two Senators and 182 Representatives sent letters voicing support for the USDAs proposed rule. Special thanks goes to Reps. Ted Yoho, R-Fla. Kurt Schrader, D-Ore. Steve Cohen D-Tenn. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill. and Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va. along with former Reps. Ed Whitfield, R-Ky. David Jolly, R-Fla. Michael Fitzpatrick, R-Pa. and former Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N. Congress still has work to do protecting the rule from attacks, ensuring its acceptance by the Trump Administration and adequate funding for the USDA to enforce it, codifying the rulemaking provisions, and increasing penalties for violators. We expect to see legislation introduced soon to address these issues and build on the rulemaking. But as with our successful efforts to strengthen the federal animal fighting law a decade ago, and our work to bring an end to the use of chimpanzees in invasive experiments, this rule is a triumph for our movement. We need to be vigilant, but today, we should celebrate. SHOW HORSES INJURED Several show horses were hurt, at least one seriously, when the horse trailer they were traveling in was involved in a crash with a tractor trailer Wednesday morning on the 10 Freeway in Redlands, reports show. The crash was reported around 8 a. m. on the eastbound 10 Freeway near Orange Street, according to the California Highway Patrol incident log. The tractor trailer lost control and swerved into the center divider, bounced off, went back toward the slow lanes of traffic and side-swiped the large Brook Ledge Horse Transportation trailer, ripping a portion of the side, according to CHP Officer Brian Alvarez. The show horses were being transported from Seattle to Thermal for an event. The trailer was carrying seven horses, according to officials. Carl Baker, Redlands spokesman, said three horses were injured and one was tranquilized. There were initial concerns that an injured horse may have to be put down, but Dr. Jade Johnston, a veterinarian at the scene, said it didnt look like any of the horses would have to be euthanized. A Redlands Animal Control officer was observed comforting one of the horses inside the trailer. Animal control officers on-scene attempted to tranquilize a frightened horse. The crash resulted in 75 gallons of diesel fuel spilling on the roadway. Ten gallons ended up in a storm drain, officials said. All but one lane was shut down as rescuers worked to get the vehicles off the freeway and help the injured animals, officials said. The crash led officials to issue a SigAlert. FROZEN LAKE RESCUE Idaho County, Idaho Citizens and law enforcement worked together to rescue a horse that had become stranded in a frozen river. Law enforcement was called for assistance to help remove the horse from the freezing river, where it was standing submerged to its chest. No one knows how long the horse was standing in the river, or how it got there. Members of the Idaho County sheriff and citizens formed a plan to put sheets of plywood and an extension ladder on the ice close enough to rope the horse. The horse was then carefully pulled from the river. To the relief of the rescue workers, the horse appears to be OK with the exception of minor injuries on its legs. The sheriff praised the community for coming together to help the horse in need. Idaho County citizens are the best, they are willing to help regardless whether it is man or beast that is in trouble, Doug Giddings, Idaho County Sheriff, told reporters. UN-LICENSED HORSE DENTIST ARRESTED Weatherford, Texas Offering to sedate a horse prior to floating its teeth has landed a man in jail. Nathan Strahan, age 33, advertised his equine dentistry business on Facebook. His advertising caught the eye of law enforcement, and Special Ranger Wayne Goodman investigated in participation with the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Goodman and an employee of the Veterinary Medical Examiners contacted Strahan, and agreed to meet in the parking lot of a grocery store for Strahan to float a horses teeth. Strahan agreed to sedate the horse prior to floating its teeth. When Goodman confronted Strahan about his lack of medical licensing to dispense sedative, Strahan told him he didnt know he needed a veterinarian prescription because he was from California and didnt need one there. Prior discussions with the California Veterinary Board had already confirmed to Goodman that Strahan was under investigation for illegally using equine drugs in California. Strahan turned over a bottle of Xylazine in his car and 3 more bottles from his house. The bottles were not marked with a prescription from a veterinarian. He was arrested, charged with possession of a dangerous drug and violations of veterinarian regulations, book into jail and released on a 3,000 bond. POLICE OFFICER CAUSES DEATH OF HIS OWN HORSE Denver, Colorado An officer who killed his mounted patrol horse by neglect has learned his punishment. In September, officer Joseph Teeter left his 10-year-old mounted police horse in his stall without food or water for 16 hours following a patrol. MC Hammer, the police horse, had been with the department since 2015. When Teeter and MC Hammer returned from patrolling downtown, Teeter tied MC Hammer in his stall, removed his saddle and took it to the tack room. Teeter then got distracted by paperwork, and forgot to untie MC Hammer. He was discovered the next morning, still tied in his stall. He was given food and water, and appeared alert and reactive, but then developed symptoms of colic. MC Hammer was taken to the veterinarian hospital, where he was treated for colic. It was determined that he would not recover, and the decision was made to euthanize him. The medical examiner could not conclusively conclude that his colic was caused by being tied for such an extended period of time. An internal investigation into Officer Teeters actions revealed he did not purposefully neglect MC Hammer. The investigation concluded and Teeter was docked 1 vacation day for violating department rules. Officer Teeter is still a member of the Denver Police Mounted Unit and was given another horse. HORSE HEALTH BLUE FLY VEILS Horses consider certain floor colors more alarming than others, according to researchers in Nottingham, England. They documented the reactions of 16 horses to various colored mats laid as flooring across an aisle. Each horse confronted a colored floor mat while it was allowed to walk freely along the aisle. Half the colored mats elicited apprehension and hesitation from the horses. The horses showed the most unease with yellow, white, black or blue mats laid across their path. They also took longer to walk across these colors than they did with green, red, brown or grey mats. When the horses encountered the colored floor mats for a second time, their distress with the scary colors was still evident, although the horses didnt pause any longer before passing over. In another trial, horses were exposed to the same mats hung against a wall in the stable alleyway, instead of placed on the ground. In this situation, color made no difference to how the horses reacted to the wall mats. BREXIT AND ITS IMPACT UPON HORSE SPORTS Brexit will be a hot topic at this years 25th National Equine Forum (NEF) in Britain, when representatives from every strata of the equestrian industry come together for friendly, non-partisan debate. The potential impact on the horse industry of Britains exit from the European Union will be at the forefront of discussion, as well as the equine database, the UK Thoroughbred Health Network, tack, bits and welfare. The prestigious Sir Colin Spedding Award will also be presented at the forum, on Thursday, March 2 at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London. Government officials, vets and equestrian industry leaders are among those who will attend the forum, which aims to inform, educate and help the industry to speak with the united strength of one voice on topical matters affecting the current and future management and wellbeing of the horse. The morning session on the horse industry, government and policy will commence with the Defra view from Lord Gardiner, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Rural Affairs and Biosecurity. Stewart Everett, from the Equine Register will follow with an update on the Central Equine Database. What might EU exit mean for the horse industry will be the focus for a potentially lively panel discussion between policy, sport, racing and trade representatives, chaired by Roly Owers, Chief Executive of World Horse Welfare. Dr Tim Parkin Senior Lecturer in Equine Clinical Sciences at the University of Glasgow School of Veterinary Medicine, will present the Memorial Lecture on the role of the Thoroughbred Health Network (THN) in the UK. These lectures are given each year and link to past winners of the Sir Colin Spedding Award. In 2015 Paul Greeves, former Executive Director and Keeper of the General Stud Book at Weatherbys, won the award. During his time at Weatherbys Greeves keenly supported the use of science to underpin developments within the Thoroughbred. This is reflected in the role of the THN as much of the data provided for their epidemiological work comes from Weatherbys. The afternoon includes a themed session entitled Tack: an anatomical perspective. Dr Sue Dyson, head of clinical orthopaedics at the Animal Health Trust centre for equine studies, will discuss tack fit and its impact on the horse and Dr Caroline Benoist, manager of research and education, Neue Schule Ltd, will look at bitting and the welfare and comfort of the horse. The afternoon will also feature British Horse Society Chief Executive Lynn Petersen speaking about the organisations new educational programme Changing Lives through Horses, which aims to support people to develop the skills, and the desire, to return to education andor employment. In addition there will be several topical slots interspersed throughout the day and the winner of the Sir Colin Spedding Award will be announced and the award presented. This award was established in 2013 in recognition of the late Professor Sir Colin Speddings services to the equine sector most especially founding the National Equine Forum and Chairing it for 19 years. The National Equine Forum is organised by a committee reflecting various sectors of the equestrian industry and has as its President HRH The Princess Royal. A MESSAGE FOR ALL STABLE HORSE OWNERS Just one hour of exercise a day, regardless of the type, takes the edge off of stabled horses, researchers have found. Their study also examined whether four different forms of exercise were equally effective in reducing unwanted behavior from horses housed in stalls. Two dozen horses, including thoroughbreds and part-thoroughbreds, received an hour of exercise daily with one of the four methods. Some horses used a walker, others a treadmill, while another group had free turnout, and a fourth group of horses was ridden. Every few days, each horses behavior was evaluated while being handled for weighing and then while loading in and out of a trailer. Each horse was also released on its own into an arena for 15 minutes while its activity was documented to assess rebound behavior. The researchers considered rebound activity as an indicator of the horses previous behavioral deprivation, resulting from being confined to a stall four metres (13 feet) square. For comparison, during another period when the same horses went without daily exercise, they received the same behavior assessment routine. horse gallops in a field Freedom in a field is the best kind of exercise for a horse. The researchers observed that horses given daily exercise did less walking, trotting and cantering when let loose in the arena, even when the exercise only consisted of walking. Those horses that had turnout did the least amount of cantering, and seldom bucked or rolled during their freedom in the arena. Horses exercised by walking or riding usually bucked two or three times while in the arena. This difference suggests that turnout was the most effective exercise regime. Meanwhile, horses without any daily exercise let out six or seven bucks and also rolled once or twice during their 15 minutes at liberty. All types of exercise left horses in a more cooperative and less reactive mood. This was reflected in less vocalizing while being handled and in taking less time to load onto weight scales. Whether they got exercise made no difference, however, in how horses behaved during trailer loading. While this study doesnt indicate whether one hour of exercise is ideal or even enough for a stabled horse, it does show that an hour of activity makes a significant difference in a horses behavior. The greatest benefits come from allowing horses free turnout, rather than providing exercise with just a walker, a treadmill or by riding. So less Gossip and more riding EQUINE CORONAVIRUS Equine coronavirus (ECoV) is classified within the Betacoronavirus genus, along with bovine coronavirus, porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus, mouse hepatitis virus, rat coronavirus (sialodacryoadenitis virus), and certain human coronaviruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus the latter two viruses have caused epidemic outbreaks of respiratory disease in human beings in the last decade. Equine coronavirus has been recently associated clinically and epidemiologically with emerging outbreaks of pyrogenic (fever-causing) and enteric disease in adult horses in Japan and anorexia, lethargy, and fever in the United States. Coronavirus infection typically begins in the proximal small intestine and subsequently spreads to the colonic epithelial cells, leading to blunting of the intestinal villi and subsequent villous atrophy. Loss of epithelial cells results in malabsorption and maldigestion of nutrients and acute diarrhea. Following a short incubation period of 48 to 72 hours, adult horses develop fever, anorexia, and depression. Changes in fecal character, ranging from soft-formed stools to watery consistency, and colic are seen in less than 20 of affected horses. A small number of horses develop acute neurologic signs due to hyperammonemia, which can manifest as severe depression, head pressing, ataxia, proprioceptive deficits, recumbency, nystagmus, and seizure. Common hematologic abnormalities are leucopenia due to neutropenia andor lymphopenia. ECoV infection generally resolves within one to four days with supportive care consisting of the administration of anti-inflammatory drugs and oral or intravenous fluids. Fatalities have been associated with septicemia, endotoxemia, and metabolic abnormalities leading to encephalopathy (hyperammonemia). Historically, the detection of ECoV has relied on either electron microscopy, antigen-capture ELISA, or viral isolation from the feces. All of these detection modalities lack sensitivity, especially if viral particles are not present in sufficient numbers. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of ECoV nucleic acid has supplanted many conventional virological assays, mainly due to its short turn-around-time, high throughput capability and increased analytical sensitivity and specificity. The overall agreement between clinical status and PCR results for ECoV is over 90, making fecal PCR the diagnostic tool of choice. Infected horses can shed ECoV up to 14 days. Due to the fecal-oral transmission route and the highly infectious nature of ECoV, common-sense biosecurity protocols should be instituted during an outbreak. ECoV-PCR-positive horses (clinical or subclinical) should always be isolated from the rest of the equine population to decrease the exposure risk and environmental contamination. Potentially exposed horses should not be moved until their definitive infection status has been determined. For isolation purposes, use an empty barn or an isolation unit. In a barn situation, close one end of the barn and use it as isolation area. Caretakers and owners should wear gloves, protective clothing (coveralls or disposable gowns), and dedicated footwear. Good hand hygiene should be instituted (faucet with warmcold water or hand sanitizer). Barrier nursing techniques should be established in the form of footbath or mats in front of the isolation unit and each stall. This will minimize the spread of pathogens from stalls to clean areas. It is very important to control traffic and minimize contact of affected horses with the general public. Hygiene should be maximized by regular cleaning and disinfecting. THE INCREASING USE OF EQUINE DNA Appraising a horse by physical appearance alone is a thing of the past in the world of equine breeding and selling. Thanks to rapidly changing advancements in technology, horse owners, breeders and enthusiasts can learn more about their horses now than ever before. Tests evaluating an animals deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), can identify the individual markers of a horse and unveil the genetic code that determines both the horses health and physical appearance. The most widely available DNA tests in horses look for single gene diseases, said Molly McCue, DVM, MS, PhD, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine diplomate and University of Minnesota (UM) College of Veterinary Medicine associate professor. With the increase in emerging genetic tools, I see DNA testing expanding rapidly. We used to be able to test for seven genetic mutations in horses, and now we can identify nearly 20. This information allows owners to make more informed breeding and management decisions. DNA testing requirements are very breed specific. For example, European breed associations require testing on most of their registered horses, and while its great to identify any disease carriers, McCue said issues can arise when breeders start limiting gene pools because of test results. Knowledge is power, and genetic testing is a great way to learn more about a horse and specifically test for certain diseases, said McCue. However, some associations choose to eliminate genetic lines altogether if the horse is a carrier of a disease. This can be a problem because as we try to eliminate some of these diseases, we lose genetic diversity and increase the risk of inbreeding depression, which is the accumulation of deleterious genetic mutations. In short, breeders often select for a typical trait, and the opposite side of that is a loss of genetic diversity. McCue said DNA testing is a hot button issue in the industry right now. Many owners worry that information about their horses learned from DNA tests could have negative economic impacts, she said. I understand that concern, but I think educating horse owners and breeders about how to avoid the risks of recessive diseases and how to manage these horses if they are carriers would go a long ways toward easing those concerns. The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) currently offers a five-panel test to determine if a Quarter Horse is a carrier of five genetic diseases including glycogen branching enzyme deficiency (GBED), hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA), hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), malignant hyperthermia (MH) and polysaccharide storage myopathy type 1(PSSM). We require all stallions to be tested with the five-panel disease test, said Tammy Canida, AQHA director of registration operations. AQHA began requiring stallions to be tested in 2014. It allows owners to know if horses are carriers of these diseases so they can make responsible decisions for their breeding programs. These equine diseases can affect a horse in a myriad of ways. Some can severely impact a horses health and even be terminal, while other symptoms are fairly mild and can be managed to lessen the effects. McCue has spent her veterinary career studying these diseases and holds a patent on the PSSM test. Her passion for American Quarter Horses is what drives her to improve things for the breed and address some of the misconceptions out there regarding these diseases. PSSM can be managed with diet and exercise, said McCue. However, without these genetic tests, a horse owner wouldnt know that management of a disease was necessary. The panel test can also be run in conjunction with the DNA test required for most breeding stock to verify parentage. DNA testing provides us with a tool to help fulfill one of AQHAs mission statements to preserve the integrity of the breed, said Canida. DNA kits with hair samples are sent to the University of California-Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, and AQHA notifies the owner once results are in and updates the horses records with its registration information. The American Paint Horse Associations (APHA) has its own set of rules when it comes to DNA testing. According to Jessica Hein, APHA senior director of member care and publications, APHA requires stallions used for breeding to have their DNA on file before any offspring can be registered. Foals that are the result of transported semen or frozen semen breeding are required to be parentage verified through DNA testing. Foals resulting from embryo, vitrified embryo or oocyte transfer must be parentage verified. Additionally, race horses are required to be parentage verified prior to being tattooed. Coat color tests are also common with Paint Horses, as well. Available coat color tests include red factor, agouti, cream, pearl, champagne, dun, silver, gray, tobiano, frame overo, splash white, dominant white and Sabino 1. APHA also offers disease diagnostic tests to determine if a horse is a carrier of HERDA, HYPP, GBED, MH, PSSM1 andor OLWS. We advocate for genetic health panel testing, said Hein. This year, our board of directors passed a measure which goes into effect on the first of January that will require all stallions to have a genetic health panel on file in order for their foals resulting from breedings after January 1, 2018, to be eligible for registration. The genetic health panel costs 125, and theres an option for a comprehensive test that includes both genetic health and color panel tests for 139. While equine DNA testing has been around for decades, the ability to test for a wider range of traits is still in its infancy. While the UM laboratory McCue works at has traditionally focused on genetic disease testing, she said its now split 50-50 from identifying disease mutations to determining genetic performance markers similar to cattle. Looking at halter horses, many descendants of Impressive are carriers of HYPP, although theres no proof he has the mutation, said McCue. Because of this, theres the belief that HYPP makes winners, despite there being no scientific evidence to prove this. However, if we could identify the performance markers that did make Impressive a winner, we could make breeding decisions by selecting those specific traits for future offspring. If we can choose to breed for both the positive traits and the things we want to avoid, moving forward over time, we can use this information to keep horses healthy, maintain genetic diversity and improve our breeding decisions.
